Hôtel de Sully

A secret passage into the square

The Hôtel de Sully is one of the finest private mansions — hôtels particuliers — of early 17th-century Paris. It was built from 1624 for the financier Mesme Gallet and bought in 1634 by Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, the former chief minister of Henri IV, who spent his last years here.

Its classic plan is typical of the Marais: a gatehouse on the street, a paved courtyard framed by richly sculpted facades — note the allegorical figures of the seasons and the elements — then the main house, and behind it a formal garden ending in an orangery. The building is the headquarters of the Centre des monuments nationaux, which manages France’s national monuments.

Top things to do at Hôtel de Sully

Walk through to the Place des Vosges

When the gates are open, you can enter from 62 Rue Saint-Antoine, cross the courtyard and the garden, and exit through a small door into the south-west corner of the Place des Vosges. It is one of the great “secret” walks of Paris and the ideal way to arrive at the square.

Read the sculpted facades

The courtyard walls carry reliefs of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and of the four elements. Stand in the middle and turn slowly — few courtyards in Paris are so complete.

Rest in the garden

The formal parterre garden has benches and is usually far calmer than the square next door. The orangery at the end was built for the Duke’s citrus trees.

How to get to Hôtel de Sully

  • Métro: Saint-Paul (line 1) is about three minutes’ walk along Rue Saint-Antoine; Bastille is about five.
  • From the Place des Vosges, look for the small door in the south-west corner of the arcades, beside no. 7.

Insider tips

  • The courtyard and garden are open to the public during the day but can close for events or security reasons; if the door on the square is shut, walk round via Rue de Birague.
  • The interiors are generally not open, except on occasional guided visits and during the European Heritage Days in September — check the Centre des monuments nationaux website.
  • The bookshop in the building specialises in heritage and history titles.
